I don't remember ever having Shrimp Mozambique, so I had heard of this place in New Beige, Antonio's that people claimed was the best. They have a few different versions of this dish. I opted for the one with Chicken and Potatoes. Plus, I get to see how to plate it, whenever I decide to attempt it. It was great! The potato slices were cooked perfectly! The sauce was spicy, yet sweet and a very good portion of everything. I had to split in half. Definitely, going back to check out some other dishes.

I stopped in with family on a Sunday afternoon while going antique shopping in New Bedford (I had no idea, either). We entered into a jam-packed family restaurant at around 130pm and felt like we made the right choice right away. Beautiful ambience and a buzzing of waitresses with the hustle and bustle of hungry summer patrons mixed with a wonderful aroma made us smile right away. We were seated in five minutes. We started off with meat and cod cruiser tea and lobster pie. Each was 99 cents and they were all mind blowing appetizers. Flaky crust, warm, flavorful. The cod (bacalao) won that competition. The lobster had just enough spice. Portuguese rolls came with the table. Simple snd amazing. Save it for dipping! Main course we got pork stew (two of them) and the girls shared a paella. DISCLAIMER: you do NOT need to buy two entrees, the portions are among the largest I have ever seen in my 34 years. The seafood was fresh, the pork was flavorful, the sauces were succulent. We brought POUNDS of leftovers home with us. Service was warm and attentive. She seemed like a veteran. Both neighbors were so excited about the food that we struck up conversations! One of the best family restaurants around, a reason to come to New Beige!

Totes worth the drive the New Bedford from Providence. (And by drive, I mean 45 mins tops). Sometimes, Ryan and I get into these moods where we want to explore nearby towns just to see what they have going on. Last weekend, New Bedford, MA was our destination of choice. While our plan to explore the whaling museum was unsuccessful (had no idea the museum closed at 5 PM!), the decision to stop at Antonio's Restaurant first made the entire trip worth it. Antonio's is pretty much a New Bedford staple and it was obvious with the amount of locals and regulars at the place. The staff was incredibly helpful and accomodating. So let's get down to the food. For an appetizer, we started with a dish that featured littlenecks and delicious broth. The menu called out that this was Martha Stewart's favorite dish when she visited. If it's good enough for M. Stew, it's good enough for me! My lunch consisted of rice, littlenecks, mussels, and grilled chicken doused in a tomato sauce. My plate was 11.99 and there was SO MUCH FOOD! I initially wanted to order the Paella but Ryan said it might be a bit much at 3 PM....good call by him. Ryan ordered a linguica sandwich with peppers and onions. Gotta say, the sandwich was on-point but the fries were a pleasant surprise! They were fresh and perfectly cooked. Overall, we'd definitely come back to Antonio's...maybe next time I'll be able to order my Paella...

Always good perfect authentic portugese cuisine cant go wrong with the chicken antonio

If you are in the area or on the way to the Cape you need to stop here. The food is awesome. A local guy recommended the Mariscopa (sp?). Seafood stew with rice on the side. If you like paella you will love this. Huge portion for $25. I am so full. Lots of other good Portuguese food too. I'll be back.
(5)Katie P.
I love the food here. Prices are good. Food is good or great, depends on which chef is on. You can get good home cooked Portuguese food here. I love the steak with egg on top!
(4)Eliz H.
The paella was really salty and mussel app had so much garlic in the sauce, I had to stop eating it. I'd been looking forward to going, but was kind of disappointed.

I didn't love this place as much I expected to. My mom loved it though, she wanted to return back the next day! The staff was nice, but I found myself struggling to understand them occasionally. We ordered two meat croquettes, but they brought us the wrong order at first. It was good though. The mussels were spicy! The Paella was good but to heavy for my liking. My mom ordered the sardines, and she loved them. We left with a lot of left overs!

So Antonio's Restaurant has been a staple for our family since I was a child, and recently I had the pleasure of coming back to this incredible restaurant. This weekend we dropped into this restaurant for a family dinner and we were quickly reminded of how delicious the food was. We started with the shrimp cakes which were homemade and incredible. On top of that, the shrimp Mozambique as well as the Portuguese rolls were great. When it came to our meal we bought the surf and turf which was seasoned and cooked perfectly. In the end, we haven't had a great meal like this in a very long time and we are so excited that we were able to come back to this amazing restaurant.

This place is a gem for huge portions of delicious food! My mother and I get the paella for 2 that could have easily fed 4! We had tons of left overs after. Besides the huge portions, it was also delicious! Packed with seafood, a whole lobster, clams, mussels, shrimp, and amazing scallops! It fed us for a long time and was very satisfying!

I had never been to a Portuguese place before, and this place just wowed me. We were here late and the place was packed, but service was still fast. The salads were good, but it was the main courses that wowed us. HUGE portions, and all of it excellent. I had the paella, and it was fantastic. Shrimp, scallops, mussels, and lobster tail and claws, all in a rice and tomato based broth. I made the best attempt, but couldn't come close to finishing it. If I lived close to this place, I would be back here every week.

Abner and I had gone to Antonio's when we first started dating (over 15 years ago) and had a bad experience. The bad experience was that we did not know that they didn't accept credit cards, so I was left sitting at the table while Abner went in search of an ATM. We were just dating. What if he didn't come back? I could see myself scraping pork alejentana from plates and washing dishes in the back. Embarrassing. This wasn't the 1960's! We never returned because of it. Recently Abner did some computer work for a Portuguese family and they gave him a gift certificate. Married now. We groaned, remembering our past dating experience there, but they do accept credit cards now, so we were good to go give it another try. We were seated right away on a busy Friday night. As we were looking through our menus, our server came to our table and (without explanation) took the oil and vinegar from our table and handed it over to a group a few tables over. I thought that was a strange thing to do. I said to Abner, "I think she feels that we won't be needing that." We ordered iced teas and I asked the server for some Splenda. I got one packet. Not enough, so I had to ask for more. What's up with this place and condiments? Our server brought us delicious Portuguese rolls, which were fresh and delicious. We also ordered 2 codfish cakes, that were probably the best we ever had. My dinner came with a salad that was nothing great. The oil and vinegar from the other table, returned to our table. So, I said "Oh, it's back." Abner smirked. Abner ordered the paella and I got the Portuguese steak. Abner's paella was huge! Lots of seafood and he enjoyed it. My Portuguese steak was tender, juicy with 2 fried eggs and slice of ham on top. I was disappointed that there was not red hot peppers for the top, but overall, I enjoyed it very much. There is nothing fancy about Antonio's. It's a paper place mat with advertisements type of restaurant. The food was good and plentiful. Abner and I both left with enough for lunch the next day. Our tummies were full and Abner didn't have to run to the Sovereign Bank this time. Although our server brought whatever we asked for, she was a little rough and not very friendly. We liked our food (very inexpensive, our bill came to only $43), but the entire experience was just mediocre to me. Recommendations: Keep the oil and vinegar containers in the server station, so that it is not taken from one table and brought to another. When someone asks for Splenda, bring over a little container with Sugar, Splenda etc...not just one packet!

Delightful homespun New England bah (bar) which served up a great brandy old fashion. Not the fastest service but they were slammed on a Monday night and the seafood stew was excellent and plenty for 3 people. A rousing delightful seaport experience for this Californian .
(4)Victor A.
Wife and I, ate at this place two days ago and overall The experience was mediocre. We were seated right away and the service was fast but not personable. We ordered the shrimp Mozambique which was tasty and would have been better without the sand in it. The Paella portions were large but soupy and excessively salty and I could eat only a small portion of it. Pricing was not excessive. Overall, fast service with food that is not memorable. We definitely would not come back here.

This Portuguese restaurant is maybe the best restaurant in New Bedford and definitely one of the better Portuguese restaurants. There is no rodizio here, just foods from certain areas of Portugal. I have never seen a menu like this from a Portuguese restaurant, but everything was amazing! The restaurant has its own parking lot and is a little far from the main city. The decor is bland, basic wooden tables, typical layout, with some memorabilia on the walls. Service was fine, efficient, friendly. Prices are quite cheap for the portion sizes, so you won't feel guilty like at other Portuguese restaurants where it is $25 a person. Here, the typical price with an entree and a drink would be around $15, unless you order their specialty items, which may raise the price slightly. Their croquettes are definitely worth a try. They have a bunch of fresh seafood to sample as well. We had a classic chicken Mozambique, which was a great lunch dish. The sandwich was filled with perfectly cooked and seasoned chicken in a delicious sauce. The bread may be store-bought, but the chicken was the hero of this dish. We had the paella for 2, which definitely feeds 3 hungry people. In it, there were: 5 or so scallops 4 clams 8 or so mussels Slices of marinated beef Pieces of chicken Many huge shrimp pieces (with shell) 4 large pieces of lobster Wonderful yellow rice The dish was huge! It was so delicious I couldn't stop eating until I was so full. The binding sauce was delicious, composed of different spices, with a nice contrast of slightly sweet, spicy, and savory. The paella is your best option!
(5)Matthew D.
Best Chicken Mozambique in the city hands down. Huge portions, reasonable prices. The atmosphere is great, the food and drinks are even better. There's a reason Antonio's is the most well known Portuguese restaurant in New Bedford.
(5)Daniel L.
Huge portions , you always leave with leftovers . Good food, good price , good beer prices 10/12$ a pitcher for craft beers... no free refills on sodas tho. Always great specials , If i lived closer to this place I'd be eating here two plus times per week.
(5)Andre S.
Staple in new bedford if you want an abundance of food on your plate for a great price. Portuguese classics pork aletejana, shrimp mocambique, seafood paella is great, i don't think you can go wrong with any plate on the menu. Enjoy them all.
(4)Aimee S.
Love the Littlenecks. You can feel the love in the food :)
(5)Robert T.
There paella for one and two are humongous and reasonable. Good Portugese food yummy.
(5)Mike V.
Amazing lunch, quick service and very reasonably priced. Loved the pork sandwich with rice.
(5)Chris L.
Absolutely amazing food here. The small rounded potatoes are my favorite side with any meal. I always make it a point to eat here everytime I'm in New Bedford.
(5)M S.
I just went here on Saturday and let me start by saying that the service is outstanding. The waitress was so friendly and pleasant to deal with...she made me feel right at home. The food is really good too. Delicious, inexpensive and large portions...oh my! Yes I really like Antonio's and will definately be back (If I'm ever in New Bedford again). Oh and I can't forget to mention how clean it was. This place hits all the marks.
(4)Diane T.
Here for the paella for two today. Usually fabulous food and amazingly large portions. Portuguese rolls sliced Portuguese bread. Will review after the meal. We went for lunch with my parents we ordered 2 paella for 2. Well you wouldn't believe how much food there was!!! We enjoyed the rice and broth with chicken, beef, mussels, little necks, shrimp, scallops and a lobster!!! Good is always good and huge portions!!! Run, don't walk, to Antonio's!!! Our leftovers were over 5 pounds and so were my parents left overs!!! Amazing as usual.
(5)Gregory L.
Awesome. Great service and even better food. Bring your appetite or leave with a to go box. This place is a must go!
(5)Rebecca A.
This is by far the best Portuguese restaurant I have ever been to. The food is so homey and sits nice and warm in your stomach. They don't take cards which is fine by me cause I always carry cash. My only gripe is that the place is small and sometimes cramped depending on how many people are there. But the food makes it all worth it. I drive 38 miles to go to this place. I started with a chowder which is so flavorful. I always order a few dishes and split with my group. The usual rotation is chicken antonios, cacoila, and seafood paella. No matter what I have ordered here I have always been satisfied.
(5)Ann P.
Go for the friendly waitstaff, the cool Portuguese vibe, the local feel, the amazing wine, the Portuguese rolls ( I think they are called Pops)....the food, so so...I ordered the shrimp Mozambique again..this time, it came with tiny shrimp served in a heavily salted spicy tomato broth with al dente spagetti. It was just ok..too much sauce and the shrimps weren't great. My boyfriend had Paella with the same sauce, rice swimming in it (it was mostly sauce). There were two mussels, half a lobster tail dried to the shell, the same tiny shrimp and a scallop. He is not picky and ate it with gusto. Oh, garlic prevails here. Will go back for the amazing vibe. The food just isn't a stand out here for my palate. Oh, they accept credit cards now! The price is spot on for the quality of food.
(3)Jim K.
The food gets it the 5 star rating along with friendly service. The place is a small, family owned, seafood / Portuguese restaurant. A local friend of mine took me there. He knows everyone and everything in town and this is his go to place. Everything is excellent but the standout is the boulabase for two. One whole lobster, clams, shrimp, mussels and scallops in a red seafood stock served with a big bowl of rice. Fresh, baked on site bread. All this and a bottle of wine for $50 - for two. Can't beat it.
(5)John S.
What an amazing place. The only place I looked up online visiting from San Francisco. The largest portions I have ever seen, with very modest pricing. It's almost unfair. They could charge double or serve half the portions and do just as well. Of course, it would mean nothing if the food wasn't fantastic. Authentic, delicious, fresh fish and meat. Truly a treasure.
(5)Christine E.
Fantastic food sums it all up. Went with a party if 6 last night and everyone enjoyed their meal. We all ordered something different and all was great. Good service. The portions are huge. We will be having leftovers for the next 2 days.
(5)Nicole M.
I come here quite often for lunch. Sounds really simple but they make an amazing chicken rice soup everyone who tries it raves about. I also liked the chicken Antonio. I wasnt a fan of their kale soup or stuffed quahog. The decor is definitely outdated but I usually enjoy the food. **also they FINALLY accept credit cards!! AMEN!
(3)Dave R.
I had the paella which was pretty good. My wife had the Portuguese steak not so great. The steak was just so so. Antonio's used to be so much better. I'm not disappointed but I just expected more. I'll just chalk this up to maybe one of their ad nights.
(3)Jacqueline C.
Big portion! -Had the paella for one. It's huge!!Enough for 2 people. -Had the steamed littleneck for appetizer. It's a-ok. Looking forward to try the other dishes here. Friendly service.
(4)A. F.
People who come here are not exaggerating when they say the food is good and the portions are huge! My friend and I came here for dinner. The atmosphere was nice without being stuffy. The hostess sat us down and our waitress took our drink orders right away. I ordered the white sangria and it was sweet and yummy how I like it. We tried the lobster, and shrimp croquets. The lobster one was just ok but the shrimp one was good. We also got bowls of clam chowder and this was delicious! It was different than ones I've tried before but I liked it better than most. My main dish was the Alentejana with pork, shrimp, littlenecks, and potatoes. This was delicious as well. First it was gigantic, and second, the pork was so tender it melted in my mouth. I also love the amount of sauce in this dish because the potatoes soak it up and become even more yummy. And, as an added bonus, the bill was so cheap, I almost did a double take. Overall, I left with a huge doggy bag, and as a very happy customer! I will definitely be coming back.
(5)Katie R.
Extremely Sandy Scallops :( Very disappointing, every scallop was full of sand and gritty. The fries were disgusting, they looked like microwaved fries and were not crispy at all.
(1)Alexandra A.
The place I bring people to from out of town when they tell me they've never tried Portuguese food. They're always converts by the end of the meal. Also: HUGE portions.
(5)Samantha R.
Awesome food, could easily share meals between people. the portions they give you are out of this world. the quality and taste of the food was fabulous. I had chicken Mozambique and it was easily my favorite preparation of the other Portuguese restaurants i have been to in Fall River before. My meal literally lasted me three days! it was the chicken with sliced fried potatoes ( most similar to a homemade potato chip), and i ordered a side of rice because i love Portuguese rice. they give you portuguese rolls and butter when you sit down (yum!). I absolutely cannot wait to come back to this place again to eat!!! would recommend again and again. Will not disappoint!
(5)Emma S.
AWESOME! Absolutely worth every penny. We had Antonio's steamed little necks to start. They were great! It had a bite to the sauce, which if I were eating bread, I would have mopped up every drop. My husband had the Atlantic salmon which had been cooked so the bottom was crispy. Not one piece was left. I had paella for one. Even if I did not have anything before I still would have at least two meals out of it. Lobster, mussels, clams, chix and meat in the best flavored rice, DELISH! We took home a three lb container of the leftovers. And finally we split the flan, we had too, and it was terrific. So don't miss this place and go early, the line is down the block.
(5)J C.
This place is pretty dang good. The portions are huge, so I ended up just getting an appetizer, a couple beers, and a dessert. I wish I could get an entree. I got the Shrimp Antonio's, aka Shrimp Mozambique with rice. The rice was subtly seasoned. When I dripped the heavily seasoned sauce over it, it was great. It had just enough spiciness to taste, not painful at all. The shrimp was a tad overcooked, as evidenced by the chewy chalkiness, as opposed to a tender snap. For dessert, I got a slice of Bolacha Maria cake, aka Maria Cookie Cake. It was my first time having such a dessert. The coffee flavors reminded me of a tiramisu. The cookie layers were extremely thin, but it added an element of chewiness to each bite. There was a pudding or icing in between each cookie layer and it was basically creamy sugar. Excellent dessert.
(4)Jared Z.
Best Portuguese restaurant I have been to. The menu is not enormous, but everything is top-notch (I actually prefer restaurants with smaller selection and higher quality). Plus, the portions are huge. I had the pork (cacoila) and littlenecks with potatoes. It was unreal!! The best cacoila I've had, and it's enough to feed 3 people. I also had the kale soup, cod fish cakes, and stuffed quahog. I was visiting home for the first time in a year and this is where I had my last meal before flying out. That says it all.
(5)Bo K.
Food is ok... Sort of overrated imo.
(3)Sarah C.
Was excited to try a new Portuguese restaurant, and unfortunately this restaurant did not earn the four star review it has on here. The portions are huge, yes. However the restaurant seems to care more about quantity over quality. The steak was a big steak, but it wasn't a true Portuguese steak. It was smothered in what seemed to be just plain brown gravy, and was extremely plain, with rice that tasted like microwaved Spanish rice. The kale soup wasn't very good either, had no flavor and was almost milky. The chowder however was good. If your looking for a lot of food on your plate come here. If you are looking for good food that you don't mind paying for when the bill comes, try one of the many other Portuguese restaurants in the Fall River/ New Bedford area.
(2)Jnb O.
My wife and I really liked Antonio's but we couldn't always go there as we don't always keep cash on hand. But now they accept credit/debit cards!!! It's on now! No more driving by because we don't have enough cash on us, we are going in! We always try to sit at the bar if we can, because we think the service is better for the most part. But honestly in this case we have never sat at a table here so we don't know if it's true or not. With that said, the service has always been fantastic for us. The food is delicious and there is A LOT of it, you most likely will be bringing some home. I think my favorite right now is either the Paella or the Pork Alentejana . Sitting here now typing this, I can't believe I've never even tried the Portuguese steak. Looks like I might have already picked out my next meal!
(4)Miguel G.
Ate here about 3 years ago with family. Brought my mother in laws left overs which consisted of rice and chicken to work. As I was almost done with the rice, I noticed it was crunchy in some bites. Come to find out, I had cooked cockroaches in my meal. Ever since that day I avoid this place. Also, the beast of a waitress ended up spilling hot butter on my lap because she slammed my plate down on the table. This was my experience and my opinion.
(1)Jeff M.
Some friends of mine, who know me very well, took me out the other night to this place. Loved it. I hate to miss out on a chouriço moment when in the area, and thought I'd start my meal with a bit of Portuguese sausage. They don't have it on the menu, but were happy to send out a grilled Linguiça instead. Much, much happier than a salad IMHO. The menu specials included a number of tempting options, including whole quail and lamb chops; but I couldn't turn away from the rabbit. A Braised Rabbit, served Mozambique style, with rice and sliced, fried potatoes. The rich tender protein was glorious, bathed in warm roasted flavors of garlic and piri piri peppers. It is really a finger food, rabbit doesn't fall off the bone like other braised meats, and I made quite a mess. Totally worth it, it was darn good. The Pork Alentejana and Bife à Antonio's were also big hits, but the Beef Tenderloin Tips were a bit of a miss. Not the best cut of meat in the house. Great night, great place.
(4)Mike R.
Came here with a party of 4 for dinner. No wait at all, food and service was excellent. Huge portions!! Small place, but def. has a european cafe type of ambience........ Really liked the ambience here. Place is great. Our waitress and her sister are co-owners of this establishment. Chef here is the owners/waitress husband. Says alot when the owners are involved to the degree that these owners are. Prices are average. Very impressed overall. Def. wil return here in the future. Loved it!!
(5)Pallas H.
It seems like every other restaurant my boyfriend has suggested has been pretty blah for food quality. He redeemed himself by taking me here for dinner. The majority of ambient conversations weren't in English, staff and patrons alike. It's a cozy little restaurant serving, what I assume is, traditional Portuguese food. Let me clarify: It's amazing food. I can't pronounce some of the names (I don't speak Portuguese) but we've been here a few times now and it's all been delicious. Seafood, steak, vegetables... Huge portions that are more than reasonably priced. I haven't finished a meal here yet. Leftovers make a great lunch the next day. I do want to pace myself a little more and save room for dessert next time we go.
(4)Al T.
This place has such a good reputation, but I believe it is quite overrated. The servings are plentiful, if u like rice and potatoes dominating your plate than you are in the right place. The price point is a bit high. The service is good. The food is over seasoned in my opinion. My last 2 visits have been disappointing. My first visit I ordered the Portuguese steak, it seemed like it was reheated because it was dry. The second time I had a pork dish with clams. It was super salty. 2x disappointed. I won't go back. Maybe back in the day it was great but it seems that they have become complacent.
(2)Brian S.
You won't leave hungry Some places have good food at ridiculous prices. Others have good prices but not much food. And still other restaurants have large portions and good prices but crappy food. It's not easy to find a place with all three. Well, Antonio's is such a place. The food is amazing. I'm hardy an expert on Portuguese food but I do know seafood and this was great. Lots of flavor and freshness with the feeling that it just crawled out of the ocean. Hard to get much better than this. To make it even better the portions are enormous. It's not easy to fill my vast and voluminous stomach but Antonio's managed to do it. And the food just keeps coming. Great bread, soup, veggies and of course the fantastic seafood. I don't care how big your appetite, it just isn't possible to leave with a scintilla of hunger left. The service was prompt and pleasant, the prices reasonable and the atmosphere cool if not exactly exciting. Just about everything you could ask in a restaurant. If you are looking for Portuguese food or just seafood in general it's hard to find anything better than this. Great food, in large portions, at good prices just cant be beat.
(5)Dave L.
Had lunch here on Patriot's Day with a bunch of family. The food was very good and the portions are huge. My favorite dish was one of the apps - Littlenecks Bulhão Pato - which is a bowl full of tender sweet littleneck clams in a spicy garlicky broth. Wicked good! Also almost as good were the fried sardines which are whole little sardines that are served with a great side of garlic in oil. They were salty and delicious and crispy. There were 9 of us and our waitress had it all under control. Food came out hot and fast and everything was cooked perfectly. The Portuguese fish fillets were excellent, as was all the seafood. Fresh and skillfully cooked. Just be prepared for enormous portions!
(4)George N.
Antonio's is awesome and the staff were very friendly. My wife loved the food. The portions are huge. We will definitely be back. Next time we will leave room for desert.
(5)Dali L.
This place is old school Portuguese-New-England through and through. And that is what you get. If you want a modern, sleek experience, go somewhere else - I highly doubt it will be this good... I went here yesterday after two friends recommended it. At first i thought a smaller, less known place might be preferred. BUT, I was so wrong. Various locals recommended this place over and over again too. This place was perfect. Our server was casual and efficient. She didn't hover. She knew the menu, answered whatever questions we had and got us rolling with our order right off the bat. The food was terrific. The shrimp mozambique and the lovely portuguese rolls had me sated, but when the clams and pork dish arrived, i left any reservations and dove right in. Our vino verde was spot on perfect for the meal too. This place is right off the highway. There is parking next door, but watch out crossing that street! The prices are right. I paid with a credit card and that was that. My only regret was that our leftover take home was put in a styrofoam vessel. You can't have it ALL in an old school gem like this one. Why? Because they are keeping it real. Deal with it - the food and experience are so worth it!. (next time I just won't have any leftovers, ha - problem solved. no complaining here....)
(5)Jenn H.
This was the first place I tried Portuguese food, and my introduction to the cuisine was great. Our server was an older lady who was friendly but a little feisty. She was definitely somebody's broker-no-bullshit grandmother. Generalities: the portions are huge and flavorful. Be sure to ask whether something is spicy or not before you order it. It might not say so on the menu. Recommendations (after several trips): Is everyone paying attention? Good. GET THE PAELLA. Look neither right nor left. Just do it. If it swims, clucks, or moos, you'll find it in the paella. They are happy to leave things out and give you more of another item if you want. e.g. I am allergic to lobster, so they gave me more mussels. I got the portion for one person, and it is literally enough for three people even without appetizers and drinks. I was so full by the time I had eaten 1/5 of it that I had to take the rest home. I swear that the takeout container weighed six pounds. Sangria = delicious, tangy, and strong. Comes in a huge pitcher. Thank God we live within walking distance. Desserts: yum and extra yum to the rice pudding and the caramel pudding flan custard Appetizers: we've had the stuffed quahogs, meat croquettes, and mussels Spanish, but none of them really stood out in my mind. Meat dish: Steak Antonio's Style: my fiance loves this. He's ordered it every time and refuses to branch out. It's a tender steak cooked to order with some fried ham and an over medium fried egg on top. I see that they now have a "junior size" option, which is still 8 oz. I leave you with two words: PAELLA and SANGRIA
(4)Moe B.
Out of this world! I had grilled marinated quail. Comes with crispy salad, fresh broccoli, superb rice. Three (3!) fantastic birds splayed on the plate, grilled in garlic. Side of light peppery gravy. Fabulous. My friend had the marinated pork, littleneck clam, roast potato dish in a big bowl. So great. He had to take half of it home. Including a Smuttynose beer and a glass of top notch Casa de Santar red Portuguese wine, the total bill came to $38. Incredible Hall of Fame meal. Worth a detour when heading to the Cape from anywhere.

Really, what more can be said about this place? Antonio's serves 4-star-food in a 2-star-environment. It features easy access, lot parking and serves authentic Portuguese cuisine in ginormous portions. The waitstaff is largely a no-frills operation, so don't expect superior customer service. Besides, the pricing matrix is all wrong for that sort of treatment. If you want to be ass-kissed, go drop your paycheck at Hemenway's. In my mind, Antonio's rests securely in a position of relevance with the other well-known Southeastern New England Portuguese restaurants. The food kicks the salivary glands into high gear and the bill won't startle you at the conclusion of your meal. However, unlike many of its competitors, Antonio's leaves something to be desired in its overall experience. I don't know if it's the lighting, layout, setting, customers, servers, music, general ambiance or some combination of these factors, but for me, it has never stood up to its hype. Not to mention the fact that for such a busy place, credit cards are still shunned. I'm sorry, it's the 21st century and forcing plastic-carrying customers to pay bank fees at the on-site ATM does little to recompense patrons for your aversion to pay the usual charges for credit usage. So get with the times and provide us with a little convenience. After all, some of us have sky miles to build.

A party of three. Two of us ordered the Antonio's specialty of a shrimp/chicken Mozambique and the other a skewered lamb dish. The lamb dish lacked a deep down flavor which is unusual for lamb particularly. The Antonio's Mozambique special suffered from the same issue of complete lack of flavor and was very dry to boot. We all love Portuguese food, but this is one place we will not return to. Service was below par as well. The one highlight is that Carlsburg lager was only $2.50.

I'm not sure how I knew beforehand, having only minimal travel experience in New England, but I was aware of New Bedford's Portuguese and Cape Verdean population before I arrived. I don't recall ever having eaten Portuguese food at any point, although I have had Basque several times, which strangely seems to be easier to find in the rest of the country, and does seem to be pretty different. So I popped in to a couple of places in the Downtown area and peaked at their menus for something different, unique or - better yet - Portuguese: nothing. That was a little disappointing, particularly at the place where you gotta put your fancy pants on. Open on a Sunday, this seemed like a good choice. They had a specials list as well as a slightly pricier full menu. My MO at restaurants is typically to find something that I've never heard of, ask about it if there's not already a description, and order that if it doesn't have something I dislike - like pig's feet - or something that's going to make me sick - like yogurt. I found "feijoada," described by some scrawled words on the whiteboard as being "Port. Bean Stew." I immediately outed myself as a rookie by pronouncing the "j" as you do in Spanish to the bartender, and was quickly corrected: fay-joe-ADA. They have a dinner portion for $9 and a lunch portion for $7. I got the lunch. And I'm glad I did. An enormous plate of food, with bread came out. It's not just "bean stew" either; it's pieces of pork, sausage (maybe chorrizo), red beans and some wonderful rice. I actually finished off the rice before I got to most of the pork and filled up before it was all done. They had a couple of black olives mixed in, and some of the pork had obtained an olive taste, which is another thing that I don't particularly like, but am able to tolerate (especially if it's this good). So, yeah, feijoada... Crowd was mostly locals known by the staff and the music was terrible pop. Draft beer selection was commendable for the size of the place, but certainly not a beer bar. Most of the people were ordering bloody marys, but it was a Sunday midday, so I would expect that. Very recommended though, particularly if you've never had Portuguese food. Most of the items on the menu were pretty tame for American tastes, but you just have to branch out sometimes and take a risk on some food that may be absolutely delicious. If I ever get back to New Bedford, I'll be sure to stop here again.

So far one of my favorites only thing that sucks they have no juices mostly wine an it could be a little pricey the service is great but some waiters can be a pain

Good food, decent prices - No complaints from me. While I have nothing bad to say about this place, I do feel it is a bit hyped-up. It seems lots of people rave about Antonios, yet I find it on par with what should be expected in a dining establishment. Nothing stands out as being remarkable, yet nothing to complain about either. You can't go wrong eating here.

LOVED it. Ate lunch with a friend on a cold rainy day in July and the Seafood Paella was perfect. It was HUGE. I got the "for one" ($18) and can't even begin to think what the "for two" would look like. It contained 1/2 a lobster, 3 huge mussels, 3 clams, many scallops and shrimp, beef and chicken. The spice was perfect. Plenty of parking directly across the street. The decor is dated but who cares I'm coming back again, and again and again for the Paella. I never take pictures of my food. I took pics and started texting to friends to make plans for a return visit. The server was prompt, kind and always a big smile. (My friend had the salmon and said it was best she ever had.) I'm giving it a 4 because of overall food, decor and such. But the food is a 5++++++ You can also eat in a separate bar area or the dining room. We ate in the dining room.

I love the Shrimp Mozambique. It seriously doesn't get better than this. The portion is out of this world with I swear 30 shrimp in the bowl they give you. With Shrimp Mozambique you have to add some fries. Oh ya, their fries are stupid delicious too. They have a really decent wine menu, with tons of Portuguese wines (obviously) which you seriously try if you like wine! Their steak Antonios is always a great choice! 16oz I think, and you can get a junior size as well. It's topped with ham and an over easy egg which just runs all over the steak. YUM! The steak also comes with two sides which is usually rice and fries. Starch city, but totally worth it. You won't leave Antonios unhappy, so if you haven't been, you're missing out!

Great place for delicious Portuguese cuisine! My family and I visited this past weekend. Antonio's had been recommended to us by a few people. I'm Portuguese, grew up on Portuguese food, and have been to most of the Portuguese restaurants in the Fall River-East Providence area but never past the Westport/Dartmouth area. As soon as you walk in you're greeted by the delicious aromas of Portuguese cuisine. Antonio's is a quaint restaurant that has a chef/owner feel. The wait staff has been working there for years and is very familiar with food and the menu. In quite a few cases, the wait staff knew many of the customers as well. Our server was not the friendliest BUT she reminded me of my own Portuguese mother and Grandmother. A basket full of fresh Portuguese bread was dropped off after we ordered. We all shared delicious littlenecks in white wine garlic sauce appetizer and it was delicious. The sauce was so good we used most of the bread sopping it up! I had a bowl of the Portuguese kale soup and it took me back to my mom's kitchen years ago. It was piping hot with big chunks of kale, cabbage, beans, and pasta in a potato broth. The food was presented beautifully in a very old world style. We were given empty plates and the food arrived in what looked like handmade metal pans/pots fresh out of the oven. I had the Carne De Porco Alentejana (Pork, little necks and potatoes) and it was the best Alentejana I have had to date. (Sorry mom) The portion was so large it provided 3 lunch meals for me. My wife had the chicken version of the dish and it was equally delicious...and large. The prices were very reasonable given the vast amount of food we attempted to finish. Their website is very informative and includes their menu so we knew what we were in for before we arrived. antoniosnewbedford.com This should absolutely be on your list of restaurants to visit in the southern New England area.

It's a fantastic place, very authentic. Very reasonable prices with giant portions. A Paella for 1 is enough for 2 people with an additional course. Highly rated, and as good as it gets.
(5)Ati D.
This place is phenomenol. If you are driving to Cape Cod or Boston or whatever, stop by and get soem of this amazing Portuguese style seafood. This is honestly the best seafood I have tasted in my whole life. We ordered the cod fish cakes (yum), lobster croquettes, mahi, grilled sword fish, kids had fish and chips. But everything coming out of the kitchen looked sooo tasty. And people in the restaurant looked completely satisfied. Service was great too, very hospitable. Highly recommended if you are driving through or spending a night.
(5)Swedish C.
If you want real deal Portuguese food this is the place for you. Great selection on the menu and normally they will have about 8 - 10 specials on any given day. My go to dishes are the chicken and shrimp Antonio, seafood paella for one or two people ( the one person serving can feed two and the two person can feed four ) no lie, the portions are huge here for almost all the dishes. Seafood is so fresh, the fishermen are just around the corner. A lot of the house dishes are cooked and served in these huge aluminum pots, always impresses first timers. Most of the servers have been here for a long time so service is swift and courteous. No frills, eat and have a good time. Also get the pitcher of red sangria. Very refreshing on a hot summer night. Be prepared to take food home, and I mean at least two more days of meals. Drive home with the windows down!!! The garlic smell is hard to get out of the car.... Not a bad thing. Cash only folks.
(4)Alberto R.
Simply the best. Too bad they are so far from the Cape.
(5)Sierra B.
To me it's way overrated. I didn't like it and our waitress was rude. Terrible customer service and I've definitely had better. I truly think that this restaurant only has good reviews because there is such a low number of decent restaurants in New Bedford. Good food and service is hard to find in this area!
(2)Joojie R.
As a personal trainer, I recommend you don't eat the entire day before coming here. The portions are ridiculous. I had the fisherman plate.... I was in the mood for fried stuff and that's what I got... a PLATTER of fried fish and potatoes and it totally hit the spot. Pretty sure I gained 5 lbs but I'll work it off tomorrow. :)
(4)Jessica S.
Cut place, nice staff. Food was good. We got the shrimp mozambique, salad, steak, and a few croquettes
(4)George S.
Coming home from Cape Cod I stopped here for dinner after reading my friend John B's review of Antonio's. I sat at the bar and had a small order of the sardine and I could barely finish it. The fish was great and it came with a side of rice and a salad. Had two Carlsbad beers, you don't see that on tap to often, and the bill came out to $16. The people at the bar could not have been nicer and this is a real great place to stop for a great meal.

A trip south of Boston today with lots of time to spare, made us decide to hop off the highway and spend some time checking out New Bedford and Fairhaven. We'd heard good things were happening in New Bedford and that it was becoming more of a destination. Our first stop was lunch and thanks to Yelpers we decided on Antonios and are we glad we did. It was really busy on a weekday afternoon which I thought was a good sign. It is a homey and comfortable restaurant with a bar on one side and the rest of the restaurant on the other. Nice separation so you're not bothered by the TVs at the bar. There is an impressive menu of primarily Portuguese dishes. We read on the menu that this place was voted to be one of the best ethnic restaurants in New England by Bon Appetit magazine. We also learned that at some point Martha Stewart had been by and her favorite dish was the Steamed Littlenecks- Bulhao Pato. We started with the fried squid appetizer which was good but no better than what you get anyplace else you've had it. While I enjoyed it I was sorry I hadn't opted for something more specifically Portuguese. We also tried the cod cakes filled with minced cod and potato, rolled in crumbs and fried to perfection. Very good. For my main dish I got a broiled seafood platter. What came out was an enormous plate heaped with shrimp, scallops, and scrod with a delicate lemon butter. It came with a side of boiled potatoes which were a reminder that when food is simply prepared you often get perfection . This dish was carbo heaven as there was also a side of rice in a tomato based sauce that was incredibly tasty. And there was also a side of broccoli. My husband got the fried version of my meal but his also included fried clams. By the time we were filled and could eat no more it looked like we hadn't made a dent in our plates. We assured our lovely waitperson that we loved every bite of food but there was no way we could have eaten any more. The prices are incredibly low especially when your baseline is the cost of similar meals in Boston. Oh...and the draft beer of the day was $2.50 a pint. After lunch we needed a walk and we enjoyed our brief tour of downtown New Beford with charming cobblestone streets and some amazing architecture. This is a city with an incredible maritime and whaling history, some of which you can learn about in the Whaling Museum. There are definitely reasons to head down to New Bedford for an afternoon and Antonios is certainly one of them.

They now take credit cards, including AMEX. I noticed a few of my Yelp brothers and sisters who were annoyed that Antonio's was cash only, but when we went there last night, we used AMEX. So hooray for that. Hooray also for the food, which was amazingly inexpensive and yummy. We were staying in New Bedford at Orchard Street B & B, and our innkeeper suggested that we go to Antonio's. Hubby and I split the seafood stew, which contained shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops and lobster in a spicy tomato sauce for $25. It was all fresh and tasty, and there was plenty of lobster. Our boy got fried fish, which he loved and could not finish. He was not a fan of the fries, though. I would say if you have a choice of fries or rice, get the rice. Loved the half bottle of wine options. For $8 you can get a half bottle or for $5 you can get a glass of wine. Of course they also have full bottles at bargain prices as well. Look at some of the pictures posted here on Yelp! Just look at that food. I, too, took some snaps of the photogenic food on my table. Service was friendly and fast. Decor was kinda weird but this is a neighborhood, old school place, so that only adds to the uniqueness. Parking lot just across the street from the restaurant.

Unbelievable portions. Great informal dining. You want to die from overeating, this is the place! Their."half portion" could feed the Army. If you are hungary and want goid family style Portugesse food, you will not be disappointed.
(5)Mike O.
Great food, huge portions, low prices, no frills...the way a Portuguese restaurant should be. Having married into a Portuguese family, I've had my fair share of Portuguese dining experiences in both Portugal and Southeastern MA & RI. Antonio's is near the top of my list of favorites. My only negative comment would be that they're a cash-only establishment...however, that sort of adds to the charm for me. PS, John the bartender is hilarious.
(4)Zach M.
awesome food and the prices are great

My wife is a gourmand. She enjoys cooking and fine foods and has a very critical palette. She has worked and dined in quite a few excellent restaurants here and abroad. I was shocked to hear her say that this was the best food she ever had in a restaurant in her life. The waitress was excellent and friendly, ensuring that we were enjoying our dining experience. There were several families, including some with small children. There should be something to appeal to most kids on the menu, and they had a selection for children as well. The food was truly phenomenal and the portions herculean. I could have eaten the croquetes de carne by the dozen and my wife loved the cod croquettes. Be prepared to haul a take-home bag (you will not want to share with the dog...sorry, Mollie); my wife barely dented her Ribaatejana. I managed to finish my Portuguese Steak (steak, ham, fried eggs, ham, rice, and the ubiquitous fries slathered with a delicious brown sauce.) Save room for the rice pudding - the best I've ever had. It's so dense, my wife refers to it as a rice flan. Antonio's sports a bar and there is a fine selection of Portuguese liquors as well as a good selection of more traditional American cordials, wines, and beers. I called for reservations the day before, but the hostess forgot. There was a line - a long one - but she made it right. I do recommend calling a day in advance - and I suppose a little reminder around noon or so wouldn't be a bad idea. Even though there was a steady stream of people in line, it seemed to move fairly quickly; unless you are herding a crew of hungry littles, the wait seemed to be reasonable....especially considering the quality of the meal. There is a parking lot across the street for Antonio's customers. The restaurant does not take credit cards, so make sure you bring cash.
(5)R K.
Not the best I'v had.. Kinda disappointed. Very large portions, food was price accordingly. Wish the quality of food was as good as other options out there.
(2)Alli C.
Food is just ok compared to the other portuguese restaurants in the area. They are cash only and the seating is cramped. Their apps were good but they were so hot I burned I burned the roof of my mouth.
(2)Ken Y.
large portions and a childhood favorite for me! Best Shrimp Mozambique around!!!! Value is ridiculous!
(4)Dave T.
This is my favorite spot. Where else can you take your wife out to dinner get a great meal, a 32 oz beer and spend less than $30 dollars?? Dave at the door is a great host and will make sure that you are seated promptly. Gets very busy on the weekends but grab a drink in the bar while you wait. Well worth it!
(5)John B.
If you're hungry, the paella for 2 is a good meal, including lobster! If you're not that hungry it will feed 3! Or, bring some home and enjoy it again. (I have to admit, though, that it tasted better in the restaurant than it did the next day.) My second visit and I'lll be back. Reasonable prices, too.
(4)Gary L.
Go hungry! Be prepared to wait, but isn't waiting for awesome food worth it? Leave the credit cards at home, cash only. (they did install a new ATM). They just did the place over and it came out nice. Glad they didn't change the food!
(4)Jeff F.
I am a fan of this place not because the food is excellent, but because the overall experience is excellent. The food is good, the portions, service, price are all excellent. I've been a couple of times and can say the pork chops, paella and house steak are pretty good. The croquettes de bacalau are not that good so I'd steer clear. Keep in mind they only accept cash, which is usually a sign of a good restaurant. It's usually packed, so there's automatically a good atmosphere. Would recommend checking it out
(4)Gene D.
Portions are absurdly large. Restaurant was quite full on the Tuesday night after Christmas. Pork ribatejana consisted of tender, although sometimes fatty pork, little neck clams, medium size shrimp in a flavorful broth topped with french-fried potato cubes. Served with Portuguese rolls. Ambiance and noise-level were decent and service was good. Gave it three stars because I haven't had enough Portuguese food to compare it to but I would definitely go back here.
(3)Katelyn B.
This place is fantastic. All the appetizers and dishes we ordered were delicious. I lived in New Bedford for a year and worked with the Portuguese fishing community during that time. Antonios is where the boat captains would bring their wives and families. And for a good reason. The portions are HUGE and the food is fresh and authentic. If looking for Portuguese and you are in southern Mass, this is where you want to go. Make sure you bring cash.
(5)Heather G.
If I could give no stars I would. Horrible customer service. I Called at 8:40 to place an order for take out cocoila plate only and she said it was too late they already closed, why are your hours til 9:30 if you don't honor those hours?! First impressions are the ones that count for me. I wouldn't refer anyone to this place, they are lazy.
(1)Joni J.
Comfortable, homey atmosphere (don't let the outside fool you), great food, decently priced (though not cheap, by any means). My husband and I shared a bowl of clam chowder, and the baked (broiled?) scrod/scallops/shrimp dish with potatoes, rice and green beans. The portions were plentiful and the flavors were fabulous! My major complaint is that I felt a little rushed by the waitress--like taking my order was an inconvenience to her (which was odd, since she seemed to have plenty of time to socialize with customers of the male gender...) Disclaimer: I had only been in the area a couple days, and have since run into this "hurry up, you're wasting my time" attitude on several occasions, so maybe it's just a cultural/regional thing. Also, they do not accept credit cards, which we have found to be more a rule than an exception in this area. Overall, I would recommend Antonio's.
(4)Alan L.
This place is awesome. My wife and I took my mother in law for her birthday and we order appetizers and it was awesome. I had the surf and turf (steak with scallops and shrimps on top) and it was good. Large portion and reasonably priced. Will come back again if I am in the area.
(5)William S.
Short and sweet, best place on the south coast of New England. Cash only...get here. Did you hear me...get here.
(5)Nathan G.
Excellent! As someone new to the area, the idea that such an amazing restaurant can be in such a remote location makes me breathe a sigh of relief. After one visit, I know this will be a regular in the rotation. It's got flavor, character, and some of the best clams I've ever had.
(5)Paul G.
Terribly disappointed after reading all the rave reviews. My rating is based solely on the quality and preparation of the food. Two in our party ordered the crab cake dinner and these were made up almost entirely of bread filling and barely any crab. The table shared two appetizers, the shrimp Antonio and the steamed littlenecks. Two also ordered the paella for dinner. The preparations and flavors of everything were uninspiring.
(1)Rosie and Tigg K.
Amazing dinner tonight. Sangria yummy every dish hot delicious and great portions. Coming back next time were in the area.
(4)Chris S.
Went here with my parents, wife and two kids for lunch. Plenty of menu options and a decent beer list. Many of the menu items contained Mozambique sauce...why not? It is the most delicious sauce I've ever had...I want it flowing through my veins! The portions were huge, so I recommend sharing with someone and paying the extra buck for sharing a plate. This place is great.
(5)Colleen C.
really great restaurant. Following other recommendations, i had the shrimp/clams appetizer. Typically i would never do clams at a restaurant, as we dig our own and consider older than two hours to be less than fresh, and i love the taste of the sea. We would have been proud to serve these clams. Perfectly cooked (not overcooked) with a very fragrant and flavorable broth--truly delicious. As with the clams, the shrimp were done perfectly, not tough and overcooked. I had the combination bz i feared average clams, but next time i would go with a strictly clams dish. My lunch partner had the grilled sardines--also excellent. Antonio's has the right idea, focus on really fresh ingredients simply prepared--let the main ingredient shine.

Only three words are necessary for this place: Eggplant French Fries. Yeah, ok, so I'm a total dorkwad and had no idea what I was ordering. I saw eggplant french fries and figured, oh, it's french fries with a little bit of eggplant on the side or sprinkled on top or, well, I really had no idea. They come out the french fries look odd. Not like potatoes. But I still didn't get it. Then I bit into a couple of pieces. Wait! This doesn't taste like french fries. This tastes like french fried eggplant! *cue cherubs* I was pretty lucky. There was parm sprinkled on top so the dairy-allergic boy couldn't eat any. His grandma, who I was meeting for the first time, didn't eat any of that stuff anymore, being in her late 90s. YES! Eggplant french fries all to myself! I remember the rest of the food being pretty good. I had a salmon which was pretty tasty but nothing out of this world. I can't really remember much of the food other than it being better than average but not exceedingly amazing. But those eggplant french fries... *sigh* Maybe a trip to New Bedford is in order soon.

Among all the restaurants I've ever been to in both Taiwan and USA, this is my number 1 restaurant. It is funny because I never thought my favorite restaurant is a Portuguese restaurant. The food is so amazing and I can eat there every single day. "Fried Oysters" is a must-try. I don't know how they are able to make the oyster melt in your mouth after deep-fry, but there is no exaggeration, they literally melt in your mouth. "Shrimp Antonio's" is my second favorite dish at Antonio's. The sauce is simple but full of flavor. I am a seafood person, so I didn't try any chicken or rabbit meat dish. My dream is to one day go back there (I am now living in Baltimore) and try all their littlenecks appetizers on the menu. Just to make several comments on other aspects of this restaurant - you have to go there early like 5:30pm, otherwise, it is packed with local customers and the waiting line is long around dinner time. Also, they only take cash. Finally, they really pile up your plate with food. The best way to eat there is to go with friends, so that each person can order something and everybody can share and taste different things.
(5)Cheuk S.
My buddy and I came here on a weekend to grab a quick dinner and I gotta say I was quite impressed by the quality of food and service, and it helps the price was fair as well. We got there at 7ish and the place was pretty packed at both their restaurant and cafe/bar section. But somehow my buddy got a table and we sat down pretty quick without waiting, and remember they don't take reservations. The owner was quite friendly and suggested the shrimp rotisserie for appetizer which was quite big (at least 15 pieces) for a starter. Then we picked the Paella dish for one individual which again was huge and definitely big enough for two+ which was the case for us. So I think I made my point clear that their portions are large and the price was fair. We both ended up paying about $20 each, and that includes two Portuguese beers which had a good light flavour. The service was pretty good and responsive so no complaints there. The crowd is mostly family type or older folks. In addition, I seen some reviews complain about the decor and I say the decor is fine, not fancy and just normal and homely which is fine for this type of restaurant. So overall, definitely a must try for anyone who likes this type of food and near the area; kinda sucks it's this far away from downtown Boston area, even from my place took like 40 minute drive but well worth it.
(5)Fred K.
Came here on recommendation of friends. Really easy to get to off 195. Wow, is this place good. The stuffed quahog with the linguica was different and awesome. Wife got the scrod. A huge portion - the sauce was light but really tasty. Roasted potatoes were delicious. Only reason this didn't get a 5th star was that my fried clams were a little rubbery. Service was super friendly, even though we got there just before the kitchen closed. After dinner, went to the bar and watched the Bruins win in a shortcut. What could be better?
(4)Katherine D.
I have always been a fan of this great authentic portuguese restaurant. I am not portuguese so please forgive my blatant spelling errors. THe ambience is more family style than anything else, and its a loud room full of people really enjoying their meals. Everything I've ever had here has been great, but I'm a fan of the calimari, the portuguese steak sandwich, anything involving breaded friend chicken, and the best of all being the carne alentejana (cubed pork, littlenecks, shrimp and friend potatoes). Heavenly!. I will be back as soon as possible.
(5)Mister G.
Definitely some of the best Potuguese food in the area. As others have said, it is not a fancy restaurant by any stretch of the imagination. But let's face it, you do not dine out in Fall River / New Bedford if you are looking for an elegant restaurant or a romantic dining experience. Antonio's has, by far,THE best mozambique sauce in the area (order the "Shrimp and Little Necks Antonio's" appetizer). The sauce is incredibly flavorful and if you're not careful you can easily make a meal out of this appetizer when you start dunking the Portuguese bread. The seafood paella is also very good, but tends to be piled high with "filler" items like calamari and mussles. I recommend getting the appetizer described above and trying some other entrees. The pork alentejana (pork & little necks) is phenomenal as well. Far better than that offered at most Portuguese restaurants I've been to. Bottom line... don't miss this place. You may like some items better at other restaurants, but you would be a fool not to give Antonio's a try!
(4)Shawn P E.
I have been a few times. Food is excellent, and the portions are big enough to share with another person. I have never had Portuguese food before going to Antonio's, but would definitely return. Easy to get to off of Rte 195 in New Bedford.
(4)Michael M.
I felt like I was lied to about this place. Waitress was very rude and seemed like she didn't want to be there. Food lacked flavor and was just ok. I'm just hoping this was an off day and I will try it again in the future. The portions and prices are very good, but that's about the only highlight!
(3)Josh G.
great food at a very reasonable price. If your looking for a little cheat night dinner on your day off your diet and your looking for good old fashion portuguese food like grandma used to make, this is your place
(5)Dave R.
Had the steak and eggs. Meat was very fatty and tough. The Chips which are kind of like french fries but baked chips were bland. The portion's were very large. Price was very good considering we had drinks also.
(2)Jesse B.
As a self proclaimed foodie I would have to say that the seafood stew at Antonio's might be one of the best dishes I have ever had. For 25$ you get an entire lobster, lots of muscles, little necks, shrimp and scallops, all cooked in an incredible red sauce. The "martha stewart" little necks in the white sauce? are you kidding me, they are to die for, and its 12$. I noticed on yelp that some people are complaining about the service. Service is good, prompt and efficient, 30 seconds after you walk in the door you will realize what the place is about. if you're looking for a server to kiss your ass and let you smell the cork, you might want go to the top of the hub with the rest of the amateurs.
(5)Mark P.
Great Portuguese food! Authentic and plentiful ! The Alejuanta can feed four people. One tip is this place only accepts cash, no credit cards or check, but they do have an ATM on site.
(4)george k.
I knew when I read how big the portions are that this may not be my favorite place. I was right. To us, large portions are not a plus, usually a negative. Antonio's portions are just TOO big and serves no real purpose except for a doggie bag. The paella for two, that is all we ordered, was humongous but did not have the subtle flavors of a good paella. I like the whole lobster, split in half. The clams were big and chewy, the mussels also were too big. The chicken and beef were okay but did not have much flavor. There was a ton of rice swimming in a sauce. Just too much. We ate as much as we could and still had a doggie bag that was extremely heavy. We left the resuarnt and gave the doggie bag to a homeless person. One good thing, I ordered a bottle of Portuguese white that I never tasted. It was a nice find. I wish they gave less food and made the dishes more flavorful.
(3)Rebecca J.
OK so where do I begin. After reading all these reviews I feel ike I should say something. I have been eating here for years. Not only is it the best portuguese food I have ever had but it offers such a variety as well. I cant help but laugh when I see some of the comments about how the rolls were not heated. Yes that is because portuguese rolls are typically not heated also the portions being something too complain about? That is how the culture is. Clearly some of these people dont understand or look to educate themselves about the portuguese food and culture before judging on what "good" food is. With that being said. When I bring my family we order a bunch of things and eat family style. The chicken antonios is a fav of mine. My mom likes the paella and the cacoila. The clam chowder is creamy and fully of clams and potatoes. The croquets aand the shrimp mozambique are a nice appetizer. The wine list is very nice and offers some interesting tastes. My only dislike about the place and the reason i gave it 4 stars is that it is too small for the volume of people that come in each night and there are some waitresses that are amazing and the same ones each time I go that could not be bothered. SO if the restaurant is not too crowded I will ask to be seated with a waitress I know is good. There is an older woman with long white hair usually in a ponytail. She is the best waitress there. But I would still highly recommend this place to anyone. It is lovely.

Terrific food at a reasonable price. The mixed skewer is awesome. Also love the shrimp croquettes. Would love to see them start accepting credit cards!

The best place to get Portuguese food. They serve very large portions of food!

I am born and raised in New Bedford and I can say without a doubt that Antonio's is my favorite Portuguese restaurant....ever. No matter what dish you get, you are guaranteed bites of deliciousness. There usually is a wait and the waiting area is small so make sure you dont get there too late. I frequently order Sumol, which is a Portuguese soda that comes in 3 flavors (my favorite is pineapple), to start of my evening. They give several kinds of bread which are all good. Waiting staff are very personable and friendly and very helpful in assisting visitors who are unfamiliar with Portuguese cuisine. Portions are pretty big so you will have some for lunch the next day. If a dish comes with french fries, I highly recommend to ask for the sliced potatoes, their like thin potato chips. The shrimp mozambique is spicy but scrumptious! If you have any room for dessert, definitely got the chocolate mousse with chocolate bits inside. Overall excellent dining experience.

Where do I start. Simply Portuguese simply done right. My party of 3 waited at the bar for 15 minutes and got seated. Ordered apps. Shrimp croquettes were really good, and the stuffed quahog was pretty good and a little spicy. I had the pork ribatejana, a mix of slow cooked pork with littlenecks, shrimp and potatoes. This dish was very authentic and tasty. A little too salty though but it was good. My wife and friend "shared" the paella. Very good w/ beef, clams, mussels and literally half a lobster. We heard the portions were big. We took more than 2lbs of paella home and the pork dish went around the whole house. I mean, I can eat and I took enough home to feed myself twice and my two kids. Ridiculous portions and very good. 2 entrees, 3 apps and 2 beers came to under $50. Not bad. Highly recommend.

This place is not for everyone. If you want a perfectly decorated restaurant ...is not for you. If you want white table clothes and fine china...it is not for you. if you want a superior wine list, designer cocktails or Whistle Pig rye...it is not for you. If you want great seafood that is impeccably cooked...this place is for you!!!! Antonio's is a neighborhood bar with a dining room with a maestro in the kitchen. The bar is filled with locals; there is European league football on the TV (After all, it is a Portuguese restaurant in a Portuguese neighborhood in a town with Portuguese language newspapers). One of us had the clam and shrimp appetizer (I don't know the Portuguese name and they do not have a website) in a fragrant and thin red wine sauce. The clams were fresh and perfectly cooked. The sauce was so good you could eat it with a spoon. I had grilled sardines - an item you only find on the menu at the most dedicated seafood restaurants. They came as a simple preparation and were excellent. Since we were there for lunch, we did not have drinks, wine, dessert or a hamburger - I can not comment on them. Will I go back...absolutely? Will I recommend it to friends...absolutely. Will I recommend it to my mother...absolutely not - she wants white table cloths! Be forewarned, the portions are large, the prices are extremely fair and the seafood is perfect.

I like Antonio's. As mentioned by other reviewers it is very popular. We went on a recent Sun night and waited about 20 min for a table. I've been here a few times, and my favorite dishes to get are the meat skewers. During the last visit I got a lamb skewer, which was on the specials list. I asked for medium and it was indeed medium. And delicious! I like the rice and fries that come with the meal. Also, you get a ton of food. The lamb special was $14 and it was definitely 2+ meals.

This is where an Irishman like me gos to get his Portuguese on. The food is beyond outstanding and the portions are huge. Whenever I eat here I end up eating it for days. The Pork and Littlenecks are out of this world. My favorite place on the South Coast. Lots of parking across the street. Allow yourself a little wait time on weekends as this place is a favorite of the locals so it can be busy.

I came here with a local New Bedfordian and was excited to try Portuguese food for the first time. I had the shrimp appetizer (which really is a full meal) and the shrimps themselves and the rice were incredibly flavorful. Despite the fact that I got an upset stomach later, it really was good food.

Went there a few years ago, everyone had always told me how great the food was there. So I decided to go there with my then girfriend, now wife, on a special day. Our anniversary of being together. To be honest I had such a horrible experience with the atmosphere I don't even remember how the food or service was. We were sat at a table right near the bar and entrance. The place is not very big but does draw a crowd so they have fit as many tables and chairs in the place as humanly possible. There was just enough room to walk between the first row of tables and the bar stools at the bar. We were forced to have our dinner among screaming sports fanatics and even worse there was a line of people waiting for seats through the restaurant as well. There was an individual standing beside me watching me as I ate, I contiplated offering him a bite, very uncomfortable. Well my suggestion to anyone wanting to try the food here......... TAKEOUT

This place is OK. But if you like Portuguese food, I mean real Portuguese food, try somewhere else. If you like American food with Portuguese names and ingredients, well then, you've found it.

Its a complete shame that there hasn't been a review on this restaurant yet, but I am honored to do it! Antonio's has been one of the two best Portuguese restaurants in New Bedford for the past 10+ years. Simply put, I know very few people who do not like their plates, or better yet, can actually finish them! A plate is really a "pinella", or pan in Portuguese. The portions are huuuuge! Taste/quality get a slightly lower rating than portion score only because I have never been to a restaurant that has given me more food. That being said, taste/texture is on point...fish plates are fresh, vegetables are always tasty and the food in general tastes damn good. (I strongly encourage the rabbit dinner, simply amazing!) Antonio's get's 5 thumbs up from me...if you are someone who likes to eat, likes to indulge in authentic Portuguese cuisine, make the trek to New Bedford...its conveniently located off of 195 with plenty of parking...

I honestly cannot believe that I have not written a review of Antonio's before. I've been going here since I was like five and go about once every month. Antonio's is pretty much the crowning achievement that New Bedford has to offer. It has always been the place to get cheap and great tasting Portuguese food in a town based on that heritage. In a town chock full of Portuguese eateries, Antonio's definitely stands above the rest. The portions of Pork Meat Ribjana (Nice Cocila-like pork with wonderful potato cubes) are plentiful and delicious for only eighteen bucks when with two pop breads and two shrimp croquettes. These big tin of food that fill a few stomachs are great for a group from two to seven. But those are just the Take out items that you get when you order ahead. The restaurant and bar of Antonio's is really Portuguese and accurate. You can get a Cocoila sandwich, linguica, many types of plates of food that are just superb and great for sharing. The place may not look from the outside like the best place to eat, but when you finally taste the scrumptious grub, you can't wait to come again!

I recently posted a negative review of Antonio's and after a few days it's gone. Does Yelp screen out reviews or take down negative reviews ?

If you like large portions for cheap money this place is great. If you are looking for quality food move on. Ordered the paella. Mostly rice. The fish in it was OK and the lobster was rancid. There was now way we could finish it. Have been there many times with friends for drinks and appetizers. Always found the food sub-standard. Had a great time mostly due to the alcohol and friends not the food. Good friends and alcohol can make any food taste good. Don't confuse good time with good food. Service was horrible. Had to constantly ask another waitress to find our waitress. It was apparent this was an ongoing problem. People in this part of the state mostly rate food by the price and portion size not the quality. This is apparent when reading some of the reviews posted.

We went on a tuesday for lunch and it was busy always a good sign. let me start with the positives. I ordered the seafood casserole. It was huge, it came in a dog bowl sized bowl. it contained a full split lobster maybe a dozen shrimp, and a dozen scallops. There were 1/2 dozen mussels and another 1/2 dz littlenecks. So for $25 you are getting a ton of seafood. the flavor was good but not awesome (see my margarets review on the mussels). My wife had the steak and fries. the steak was tasty but overcooked. I would eat here again except one problem. Cash only. The waitress did not tell us this until the end and I did not see it on the menu. It was in small print. they have an ATM for $2 plus what my bank charges me. I was looking at a 3 or 4% surcharge on my meal. Normally I tip 25-35% but this time only 20%. the waitress should have informed us before the meal. If McDonalds excepts CC then a restaurant with average checks of $40-$50 for 2 should. I think it is cheesy to not take CC but have an ATM in the dining rooom. I heard there is another portuguese place in town cafe Funchal and I think I will try that instead.

I was excited to come here after reading all the good reviews, and I have to say that I was not disappointed. Started off the evening with some fried oysters which were fresh, plentiful, and very good. Which was good, since we ordered the paella which does take some time to get done. I had never had portuguese paella, only the spanish kind so I wasn't sure what to expect. The portion for 2 was more like a portion for 4 or 5. It had tons of mussels, clams, shrimp, lobster, pork, meat in it and it was more soupy than the spanish paella. It was spicy, but not too spicy and the rice was so tasty! But I probably would have attacked all the seafood first since I know it doesn't heat up as well the next day, and saved the rest for left overs...since there will be leftovers. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu!

If you want to eat good food for a couple of days, I suggest you go to Antonio's. The food is excellent and that alone deserves the trip to this place. But the added incentive is the amount of food when you order. You won't finish your meal and you'll be able to bring the food home for an extra meal that night or for lunch the next day. Worth the trip.

I wasn't impressed after hearing all I heard about this place. The rolls we were given weren't heated or warm whatsoever, which makes me wonder why there was even butter with it? Anyways, my food was very undercooked (meat red, red, RED when I asked well done), the fries were mushy, and the rice tasted more-than-obviously-microwaved. If I go a second time, maybe I'll get something different I'll rate it again. But otherwise...I only ate 1/4 of my meal and threw it out after taking it home.
